We’ve all been there. We’ve all thought we had the next million-dollar idea and our friends and family pushed us to pursue it. Maybe it wouldn’t have been the next million-dollar idea, but it could have been a successful business that just never had enough wind to fill its sails.

When it comes to managing a business, there is the idea for a product, the capital to back the idea, the location to sell, but the emotions and human involvement aspect is often overlooked. There is the uncertainty that the idea will never get off the ground and you’ll lose thousands of dollars. There is the risk aspect where you are putting yourself out there and are completely vulnerable to harsh criticism and failure. You have to be ready to learn on the fly and seek advice from people who have been in your shoes and succeeded and failed. You also need to have a strong support system who will be there for you when you are putting in all your time and effort into your dream, even if it means at the wee hours of the morning.

It isn’t the most desirable way to live, albeit for a short period of time. However, meditation can help you work through these elements by tapping into your inner self to utilize your existing strengths and skills.

Why Meditation for Business Development?

Meditation has often been thought of as a treatment to relax, decompress, and clear our minds to be at peace. This is true, but there are numerous other benefits to meditation.

When it comes to managing a business, stress is normal, but can often get to be too much. It also involves thinking on your feet and constantly adjusting your plan to stay a step ahead of your competition. Meditation will help keep you cool under pressure, think more openly and freely, and adapt to changing situations better and more effectively.

Align Yourself

Believing in your business and yourself starts with you, nobody else. If you don’t believe in what you’re selling, the odds of success are not in your favor. Having the wherewithal to make sound decisions, stay your course, and align yourself with your business can be aided by meditation.

Be Happy

Emotions are a part of human nature. Going through the ups and downs helps us become stronger individuals and helps us learn. When it comes to business, especially starting out, there will be low points and it’s important to recognize those and stay your course. Keep a positive mindset and positive outlook. Most importantly, be happy.

Set Goals

Without goals, what are you striving towards? Set goals for yourself and for your business. Set long and short-term goals to feel the success of achieving goals, even if they’re small along the way. Meditation can help clear your mind of the negative thoughts and fears to keep yourself focused on the goals you’ve set for yourself.

The Science of Meditation

Meditation has been proven to relieve stress, depression, anxiety, and pain. It also has internal health benefits, it can help reduce high blood pressure, slow our heart rate, and ease our digestive system. Studies have shown that meditation affects the hippocampus, part of the pre-frontal cortex (PFC), which is the part of the brain that controls our memory, ability to learn new things, and make decisions.

By utilizing and practicing meditation our PFC strengthens and becomes more effective at making sound, guided decisions. It’s noted that highly valuable companies like, Apple, Nike, Google, and HBO, promote meditation and encourage their employees to meditate on a frequent basis They understand that the happier and more relaxed their employees are, the better work they produce for the company. It’s a win-win.

Brain Waves

Different types of meditation influence the brain differently. Just like different types of meditation resonate better with different people. When measuring the effectiveness of meditation therapy, brainwaves are measured with an EEF (electroncephalograph) to display five different types of brainwaves.

Alpha waves show up when an individual is relaxed and in more of a “normal” state. These help produce fewer stress hormones.

Beta waves are our normal brainwaves that occur when we are going about our normal routine. Having well-balanced beta waves means that we are able to focus better, whereas lower beta waves can be attributed to individuals with ADHD and depression. For those with high beta waves, anxiety is more pronounced which is coupled with an inability to relax, leading to higher stress levels.

Delta waves occur during our normal sleeping patterns. These delta waves lead to quicker healing and help aide in learning and memorization.

Gamma waves are associated with being in our “zone”. Whenever you feel super focused or are feeling zoned in, these are when your gamma waves are clicking on all cylinders.

Theta waves occur when we are in our deepest relaxation state. Daydreaming can also be associated with theta waves but are most commonly associated with us tapping into our subconscious mind.
