Meditation has been proven to relieve stress, depression, anxiety, and pain. It also has internal health benefits, it can help reduce high blood pressure, slow our heart rate, and ease our digestive system. Studies have shown that meditation affects the hippocampus, part of the pre-frontal cortex (PFC), which is the part of the brain that controls our memory, ability to learn new things, and make decisions.

By utilizing and practicing meditation our PFC strengthens and becomes more effective at making sound, guided decisions. It’s noted that highly valuable companies like Salesforce.com, Apple, Nike, Google, and HBO, promote meditation and encourage their employees to meditate on a frequent basis They understand that the happier and more relaxed their employees are, the better work they produce for the company. It’s a win-win.

Brain Waves

Different types of meditation influence the brain differently. Just like different types of meditation resonate better with different people. When measuring the effectiveness of meditation therapy, brainwaves are measured with an EEF (electroncephalograph) to display five different types of brainwaves.

Alpha waves show up when an individual is relaxed and in more of a “normal” state. These help produce fewer stress hormones.

Beta waves are our normal brainwaves that occur when we are going about our normal routine. Having well-balanced beta waves means that we are able to focus better, whereas lower beta waves can be attributed to individuals with ADHD and depression. For those with high beta waves, anxiety is more pronounced which is coupled with an inability to relax, leading to higher stress levels. 

Delta waves occur during our normal sleeping patterns. These delta waves lead to quicker healing and help aide in learning and memorization.

Gamma waves are associated with being in our “zone”. Whenever you feel super focused or are feeling zoned in, these are when your gamma waves are clicking on all cylinders.

Theta waves occur when we are in our deepest relaxation state. Daydreaming can also be associated with theta waves but are most commonly associated with us tapping into our subconscious mind.
